Sexual violence doesnt start and end with rape

It starts in our books and behind our school gates

Whereas women are scared its their lives men will take

Mother deconstructs the term Mother Fucker into its literal and metaphorical meaning.

Metaphorically, the singers mother was fucked over by a system that required her to work increasingly long hours, mostly unpaid, just to provide for her children.

Literally, the singer is furious at how little empathy men can have for women over sexual assault. Its a pervasive and complex phenomenon that makes women fear for their lives. How can you mother fuckers not see how terrible mother fuckers are?

The song is somewhat about my Mum, but its a bit also about the role of women in my life and the misconception of women and motherhood. She was an alcoholic and worked long hours and suffered the consequences. The song is just exploring these subjects in an abstract kind of way.

Mother was a song that explored the roles of my mother and, in turn, of women in my life. The lyric you pluckedwas inspired by a Margaret Atwood quote which opened my mind to sexual violence and led me to think of my mothers past relationships and her vulnerability as a woman beyond her as a mum. Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them. I didnt want the song to lead the listener down a certain path, but intend to open up conversations of womanhood.
